Mexican Fiesta: Our Top Picks

Gabbi’s Kitchen – Valentines Day Special Cocktail are back and this time with our favorite mexican restaurants…after all, California does have some of the best mexican food……. and we aren’t restricting ourselves to the infamous 12am Del Taco run only (though we highly recommend it!).

Three Mexican Restaurants You Can’t Miss:

1. Mercado La Paloma

If you want a place with variety, check out Mercado La Palmoa. It might only be a food court – but it is one very authentic food court. Located close to the DMV (Hope street) this place has the “feel good home-cooked filled with love” kind of food. Plus, VALUE FOR MONEY.

2. Gabbi’s Kitchen

If you don’t like the food court feel but still want to have authentic mexican food, Gabbi’s kitchen is your place. The ambiance is perfect for date night or simply a girls/boys night out. Don’t expect to get a table without a reservation. And if you do get a table, don’t forget to indulge in their salsa.

If you are someone who is fairly ambitious in your food choices – try their habanero. Every bite will bring joy to your tummy! (Located in Chapman, Orange)

3. Javier’s – Newport Beach

Great view, great food and great crowd. Its the drive leading to javiers that sets the tone for the rest of the night. You are right next to the ocean and that oceanic calmness resonates throughout. Great place for a medium sized group of people who want a fun night out. The portions are just right and we recommend sampling a few cocktails at the bar before you settle down for your meal.

Do you have favorite mexican restaurant we should hear about?

Why We Love Lamar (Kardashian) Odom

There is something so lovable about Lam Lam (as Khloe Karsashian fondly calls him)!

We, at wanted to share some quick facts on Lamar Odom with you……

1. He was officially inducted to the reality tv family hall of fame and doesn’t really care what everyone else thinks. (Kris Humphrey’s take note……)

(By the way, is it just us or does he cry a lot on “Khloe and Lamar”?) What’s cool about this whole reality tv bit is the fact that he even succeeded to get his name on the show – we don’t think any of the other Kardashian men were able to do that! Now that’s what we call a four point play!!

Don’t forget: You can now buy his cologne and pistachios at a Sears (we think) near you!

2. He was traded and didn’t pretend like he wasn’t stabbed in the back.

It’s not every day that a team you played 8 years of your prime basketball life for, decides to trade you and doesn’t even have the courtesy to tell you about it. We don’t blame Lamar for being upset. He should have created more hell for Mr. Buss (Laker’s owner). On second thought, we LIKE Mark Cuban (Lamar’s new team owner)… especially since he did a cameo for “Khloe and Lamar”……Your turn Buss!!

3. Some basketball facts (For those of you with no point of reference: Lamar Odom in addition to being Khloe Kardashian’s husband is actually a basketball player – who would have thought, right?!)

We all know the NBA is a business, players are traded and released all the time, most times players understand this part of the job, other times they get their feelings hurt, when a player is no longer feeling excepted on a team, he’s not much help, which is why the lakers felt they needed to trade Lamar. With that said, here is what the Lakers are missing in the wake of Lamar Odom being traded on the court.

Lamar Odom had a huge role in the locker room moral role, everyone in the locker room felt close to Lamar, and comfortable with him. It was said he was a very playful person, and genuinely cared about everyone on the team. One of the struggles the Lakers have this season is a weak bench, the only players who seem to be worth giving time to are Steve Blake and Matt Barns, since Shannon Brown has moved on to Phoenix. According to “NBA StatsCube” coach Mike Brown has used 13 different rotations. With vanishing of Ron Artest into Metta World Peace, the lakers are short in skills and aggressive play. Odom was a very important part of the the bench because he was the leader of the group, and he was so talented at playing small forward, power forward and center positions, he could be inserted nearly anywhere. Without Odom, the Lakers bench is averaging just 21.3 points per game, and ranking 26th overall in efficiency. The Lakers missed out in trying to trade Odom for Chris Paul, not only did they not get the super star in return, but they lost Odom’s trust and felt they had to trade him. Odom’s had $17-million deal for two seasons left on his contract, which is very cheap for his skills. Lastly, the lakers had a home court advantagewith Lamar’s presence because naturally all the Kardasians were hanging around…, and “hanging out” of their outfits which proved to be a useful distraction (especially when the Nets were in town).

Love Lamar as much as us? We want to know why.

Matt Barkley: Great Quarterback or the Greatest ?!

Remember our Anonymous USC loyalist from last week?

Well, he did us ( the honor of writing something he is truly passionate about – no prizes for guessing…we all know it has to do with one of USC’s finest: Matt Barkley. (FYI our Mr. Anonymous goes by Matt…we don’t think it’s a coincidence!)

(October 28, 2011 – Photo by Stephen Dunn/Getty Images North America)

December 22nd 2011, a day that will live in infamy, a young strapping lad with golden locks approaches the podium in heritage hall. There to no doubt that the announcement has to do with him leaving USC to take his ‘God like’ skills to the NFL.

When it happened, Matt Barkley shocked the world, and filled Trojans faithful hearts with joy and championship aspiration by saying “This team has some serious unfinished business to attend to, and I intend to play a part in it, I am staying because I want to finish what I started”, and with that statement the USC Trojans became the hands down favorite to win the BSC national championship, the very year they were eligible to play for the championship again on the arm of the golden god!

If I had to describe how amazing his skills were, I’d say they were right up there with a bacon wrapped Twinkie deep fried and served with a side of honey badger. In 2011 Matt Barkley broke the single season school record for touchdowns in a game by throwing for 6 Touchdowns on November 4th against the Colorado (buffalos) and again in December when the Trojans handed the UCLA a 50-0 drumming, which led to the firing of UCLA’s coach.

Matt Barkley threw more touchdowns in a game twice over than some of USC’s greatest like Carson Palmer, Matt Leinart, Mark Sanchez, Pete Beathard, Steve Sogge, Mike Rae and Paul McDonald. That is some elite company!

Also Barkley, set a Pac-12 record for touchdown passes and a school record for completion percentage. But that wasn’t enough for the savior of Troy, he then went on to also set single-game USC records for touchdowns, completions, passing yardage and total offense. He also lead the Trojans to a 10-2 record, including a history over the Oregon Ducks in Eugene who won the PAC-12 championship game over UCLA ( only because the NCAA would not allow the Trojans to play in the game) and every time Barkley broke a USC record, he made sure to acknowledged his place in a Trojans quarterback lineage that includes Heisman Trophy winners and leaders of national championship teams.

When asked about Matt Barkley’s return to USC, Trojans great Brad Johnson said “Just imagine being the No. 1 Trojan of all time, That’s better than being in the Pro Football Hall of Fame.” You may now pick your jaws off the ground! There is no doubt that Matt Barkley, who only took 3 seasons to break these records, who has led the Trojans to become the favorites in the BCS, next season, and who is a front runner for the Heisman trophy, will go down as the greatest quarterback to put on the cardinal and gold.

Adventures Of A California Girl – Part 2

We, at weren’t joking when we said there was more. Here is part 2 and we can proudly confirm that our girl has returned home….., perhaps scarred for life!
I thought I had finally settled in to the New York way of life… You know, walking fast, oblivious to everyone else’s existence. But with New York, everyday can prove to be a BRAND NEW DAY!!
What NOT To Do In New York:
1. There is absolutely no requirement to stop at a stop sign!!
You know you are a tourist when you are the only one actually waiting at the stop sign. New Yorkers don’t care.. I mean the worst that could happen is that they will get run over and a hot shot personal injury lawyer will sue and win them a lot of money… It’s Win-Win.
2. Don’t pretend you know anything about Russia
Ok we all know that for some reason New York has a lot of Russians (so we do know why but lets pretend like we don’t). And it seemed like any other day in New York when I got lost trying to find my way to Lexington Avenue and ended up in some sort of jewelry district. Long story short – there were a lot of Russians here. And me being my chatty self decided to strike up a conversation with one of these Russians. In some twisted way I thought I knew how to say “vodka” the Russian way… I think he thought I was crazy and here is a friendly piece of unsolicited advice — there is no real Russian way to say “vodka” and even if there is, don’t even try attempting it!
3. There is a skill to jogging in New York
We all love running outdoors…It’s one of the perks of living in California. Don’t even dare trying it in New York. Firstly I don’t understand how one does it. It’s so insanely cold that even thinking about running brings fear to my mind. Further, you have to be a real master of efficiently changing course every millisecond because there are way too many pedestrians to think otherwise. And then there is this permanent pizza aroma in the air that actual running could prove to be distracting!
4. Master the New York Walk
Share your stories with us… We want to hear from you.

Adventures of A California Girl – Part 1

One of our blog team members hit New York this week.  For someone from California, New York can be a lot to handle. We will let her explain.

I (who has chosen to remain anonymous to avoid further ridicule) started my journey in New York at the great John F Kennedy Airport. Following signs that read “Air Train” seems easy enough right – WRONG. You would think I would have had this down by now – I have flown in to JFK in the past. But lets be honest here – I am a Woman and like all intelligent Women, I suck at directions!

Tip #1: Remember if you are taking a train to Jamaica station and you get on to a train saying Howard Beach, you need to actually get off at Federal Square and switch trains. NO ONE TOLD ME THAT! The guy in the red shirt who is placed at the station to guide people like me actually questioned my ability to read when I politely asked him whether the train even went to Jamaica to begin with. So much for my California niceness!

Things You Should NOT Do While in New York:

1. Don’t assume that a “metro card” works on every train or else be ready to be really embarrassed!

Boy, did I learn that the hard way! New York has over four different kinds of trains you can take while in the City. This includes trains to Jersey as well. Make sure you have the right ticket! I played the lost, confused tourist when the train official approached me for my ticket — it sort of worked. She only fined me five times the ticket price – in retrospect, it wasn’t jail, whew!

2. Don’t assume you can’t “people watch” on the subway… You sure as hell can!

At first, I thought to myself, “I am in a confined space so to make things less awkward let me stare at my feet.” Well you are probably the only one then. People watching is acceptable and in fact encouraged subway etiquette. I always wondered what people were thinking while they were people watching but it sure did look like there was A LOT OF SIZING UP!

3. Don’t ask a New Yorker about the weather

In anticipation of traveling to New York, I asked a New Yorker for weather information. Her response “It feels like Spring”. That was complete nonsense – IT WAS FREEZING. Yeah she was cruising the streets with just a t-shirt while I pretty much looked an eskimo but what they consider spring, I consider insanely cold! I think I stopped at over five coffee shops through the day just to stay warm. #constantcaffeinehigh

4. Don’t expect to not gain any weight

There is way too much pizza and falafel floating around…. it’s hard to say NO. You would think that walking around the city would help fight off the pizza calories – well if you are a chicken (purposefully included food analogy) like me then the thought of walking in the cold would only encourage you to resort to eating comfort food, a.k.a PIZZA!

Like this post?……..This is only Part 1 – stay tuned for more.

Understanding Iran

A LOT has been said about Iran over the last few weeks and we at want to break it down for you….. YOUR WELCOME!

What You Need To Know:

1.  The U.S.’s beef with Iran goes back pretty far.  Loyalty to Israel is one issue. President Ahmadinejad comparing the United Nations, i.e. the U.S. to Satan could be the other!

2. The U.S. are convinced that Iran will develop enough nuclear weapons to start World War 3. At this point, we want to explain to you the concept of mutually assured destruction….yawn…but we are refraining from doing so. (read: wikipedia!)

3. The U.S. does not like the fact that Iran allegedly supports Hezbollah and Hamas.

4. All this nuclear talk led the U.S. and European Union to impose sanctions against Iran. Iran in retaliation threatened to close down the Strait of Hormuz.

5. We care about the Strait of Hormuz because it is a crucial ocean route for ships. Blocking the strait would imperil trade and the supply of oil.

6. World Oil is trading at around $120 a barrel.  Why? The world fears that Iran, a chief supplier of oil will slow down the supply of oil to the rest of the world.

7. Why Do We Care? Domestic oil in the U.S. increases by 2.4. cents a gallon for every dollar increase of world oil. Plus, local oil production has slowed down. (

8. What We Can Do? Nothing at this point. It’s either higher oil prices or nuclear proliferation. Blog Team

What Should You Look For In A College?

It’s almost that time of the year for high school students to zero in on colleges they want to go.  Mom says “UCLA”, Dad is hell bent on “USC”. (A typical married couple fued!) And for those of you already in college, you are probably thinking “why am I even here?”

If you have been asking yourself these questions, this post is meant for you.

Four Things To Look For In A College: (not your typical list)

1. Faculty

Faculty will make or break your college experience. We, at truly believe that without great teachers, we would have never achieved the goals we set for ourselves.  More importantly, do your research – you want a faculty member that is easy on assignment deadlines, is actually enjoyable to listen to and has an “outdoor” class schedule planned such that you get to the beach “for class”!

The best way to figure this out – check out faculty reviews online. Students LOVE talking about how much they love or dislike a teacher – use that to your advantage.

2. Housing

Shouldn’t I be concerned with getting into college before I think about housing? Sure, but we want to make sure that once you are in college, housing doesn’t come in the way. We’ve heard some awful stories about bad plumbing, lighting, scarce hot water and thefts to not throw this tip out there. Do your homework — University websites usually provide non-University housing information. We doubt they endorse bad housing.

3. Flexibility

This tip is mostly for the academic — you want to be able to make the most of your college life.  What we mean is; if you are a business major but have a passion for cinema, you want to be at a college that lets you take classes at the cinema school as part of your business major.

4. Food

For those of you who have read our past posts you know how much WE LOVE FOOD.  This tip comes pretty easy……You want your college to have some pretty remarkable food. Spend time scouting the area — we are serious!

We want to hear from you. Do you have tips that you wish you had read about back when you were considering college options?
